POTENZA

This town at 819 meters above sea level developes around a medieval historical center.Unfortunately Potenza had been destroyed by several earthquakes in 1273, 1694 and 1980.

The most important sight is the church of San Francesco d'Assisi, which hosts a Byzantine-style icon of the Madonna del Terremoto, a fresco of the Martyrdom of St.Sebastian (1550) by Giovanni di Todisco and an elaborate sixteenth-century tomb.

Also noteworthy are the Duomo, the church of the SS. Trinità; S.Maria del Sepolcro and the Teatro Francesco Stabile.

The Provincial Archaeological Museum houses objects from the Paleolithic to Roman times.

The church of San Michele Arcangelo has Romanesque features and contains a fresco attributed to Simone da Firenze.
