CATANZARO Catanzaro has byzantine origins and is known for its three V's: Vento (wind), Velvets, and Vitaliano, the patron saint. It is located on a hill offering its visitors the view on the Gulf of Squillace. In the 1500s the silk weavers of Catanzaro were famous in the whole of Europe. Stroll through the main street Corso Mazzini and visit the Chiesa del Rosario. Also called S.Domenico, this church hosts paintings from the 16th century. The public garden Villa Trieste is ideal for a pleasant rest and offers an enchanting view. Also noteworthy: the Chiesa dell'Osservanza and the Provincial Museum hosted in the Villa Trieste (archaeological finds, paintings, coins), the former church of Sant'Omobono, the Gipsoteca F.Jerace. Close to Catanzaro Marina are the ruins of the ancient church of Santa Maria della Roccella. |
