Travel and Tourism Information

REGGIO DI CALABRIA

This town was founded in the second half of the 8th century BC by the Greeks of Eubea and soon become an important centre for trade, political and military power of the Magna Grecia.

You may get a fine view of both the straits and the Sicilian coast from the seafront promenade, called Lungomare Matteotti, which fringes the city.

The remarkable bronze statues of Riace, rare Greek originals from the 5th century BC, are in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and really worth a visit.

This Museum hosts an enormous number of finds.

Also interesting: the Duomo, the Aragonese Castle high up on the hill, the Greek Walls and Roman Baths on Lungomare Matteotti, Corso Garibaldi (lined with cafès, bookshops and stores), Piccolo Museo di San Paolo (on exhibit, a collection of precious icons, archaeological finds, sacred objects and a panel, possibly by Antonello da Messina).
