BENEVENTO
An important and active town since Roman times.
For centuries Benevento was a Papal fiefdom within the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, an anomaly.
The medieval Cathedral unfortunately had been severely bombed in WWII, but still preserves an old crypta and the 13th century facade.
Among the interesting sights there are the Roman Theatre (built for Hadrian), the church of S.Sofia, (which dates back to the 8th century) the Museo del Sannio (Roman and Medieval works), and the Trajan’s arch (one of the best-preserved from the Roman period).
