NAPLES

Naples is set in a beautiful bay with the Mount Vesuvius in the back.

The old town is full of palaces, churches and monasteries.

The medieval Duomo with neo-gothic facade was built for Charles of Anjou, incorporating an early-Christian church, Santa Restituta, which now is a side chapel. The Cappella Minutolo has a mosaic floor and 13-th century frescoes. Beneath the apse there is the succorpo which houses the remains of S.Gennaro.Twice a year the blood of this saint which is kept in two ampoules, liquefies. If this miracle does not occur, this is seen as a bad omen for Naples.

The gothic church of S.Chiara was built in order to house the tombs of the Angevin rulers. The interior is very simple and austere.Interesting, the 14-th century majolica tiled cloister.

Interesting sites: Galleria Umberto I, Teatro San Carlo (one of the world's oldest opera houses), Piazza Bovio or Piazza della Borsa with the Neptune Fountain, Quartieri Spagnoli (one of the city's most working-class districts, representing the most traditional aspects of Neapolitan culture), Via Chiaia (the most elegant shopping street), Nunziatella ( an old monastery, military college since 1787), Piazza Bellini, Gerolamini (a monastery complex founded in the 16th century)

The National Archaeological Museum displays Greek artifacts and Roman murals, coins and pottery, much of it from nearby Pompeii; the Museo Nazionale della Ceramica hosts pottery and the Museo and Galleria di Capodimonte displays Renaissance and Baroque works. In town there are several castles to visit: the Castel Nuovo or Maschio Angioino,Castel dell'Ovo (the oldest castle, stands on the island of Megaris) and Castel Sant'Elmo.

Have a stroll through the streets of Via Medina, Via Monteoliveto, Via S.Carlo, Via Benedetto Croce, Via Toledo and Via Tribunali.A famous street which offers a beautiful panoramic view is the Via di Posillipo, close by the Parco di Posillipo.

Among the many churches of interest: S.Francesco di Paola, S.Anna dei Lombardi, Gesł Nuovo, S.Maria Donnaregina, S.Lorenzo Maggiore, S.Maria Incoronata, S.Maria del Carmine, S.Lucia, S.Giorgio Maggiore. Naples hosts many fascinating palazzi, like Palazzo Gravina, Palazzo Cuomo, Palazzo Filomarino, Palazzo Sanfelice.

Also interesting: the Certosa di S.Martino( 14-th century charterhouse) and the Villa La Floridiana in the Vomero area, which hosts the Ceramic Museum.
