SALERNO
During medieval times the town's medical school was the most eminent in Europe.
Nowadays the main attraction is the medieval Duomo with a set of bronze doors from Constantinople, two elegant mosaic pulpits dating from 1173, and the 18th century tomb of Margaret of Anjou, wife of Charles III of Durazzo.
The crypt holds the body of St Matthew, brought here in the 10th century.
The former abbey of San Benedetto is now the Museo Archeologico Provinciale; it exhibits funerary goods from the necropolis of Cilento and the Roman Salernum.
