Positano A small exclusive resort of great beauty set high above the Amalfi coast, a favorite destination for the jetset, artists and actors. A legend tells it has been founded by the god Poseidon.Its main feature are the characteristic white houses with spherical covers, the buildings painted in pinkish or yellowish colors and the narrow streets - terraces and gardens cut from the rock. During your stay,you may visit the ruins of a Roman villa, or the three defence towers that were built by the Viceroy of Spain - Peter from Toledo in the 16th century. The cathedral of St. Maria Assunta was almost completely rebuilt in 1700. It has an imposing dome, covered with majolica and a byzantine-style painting of the 13the century. Other churches of interest are S.Margherita and S.Giacomo. The beaches of Positano are of volcanic sand and small pebbles. Along the coast are numerous caves, like the one of La Porta, with remains of Paleolithic and Mesolithic civilization. |
