FERRARA
One of the richest and liveliest Italian Renaissance cities. Ferrara's historic centre has been inscribed in Unesco’s World Heritage list. The heart of the town is Piazza Cattedrale and the Cathedral, whose facade is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The Cathedral, consecrated in 1135, hosts several remarkable paintings by artists such as Guercino and Bastianino, a Byzantine font and the Renaissance bell tower. Via delle Volte with its covered passageways is one of the most fascinating streets.
The fortress Castello Estense is the real symbol of the city. Its was founded by the Este family in 1385. Its basic structure is typically medieval, but the style of its balconies and Venetian roof-terraces is typical of the 16th century, when the castle was turned into a magnificent ducal residence. Inside, the most luxurious rooms are the frescoed Camerino dei Baccanali, the Saloni d'Onore, Sala dell'Aurora, Sala dei Giochi. Interesting is also the Giardino degli Aranci, a hanging garden terrace.
Palazzo dei Diamanti is one of Ferrara’s most splendid palaces. It has 8500 marble ashlar 'diamonds', hence the name of the building. The first floor houses the Pinacoteca Nazionale (works by Bellini, Carapaccio, Garofalo etc), while many internationally renowned exhibitions are held at the Modern Art Gallery on the ground floor.
Palazzo Schifanoia was also built for the Este family. Its frescoes are wonderful examples of Renaissance art: the finest rooms are the Sala degli Stucchi, with its beautiful frescoed ceiling decorated with golden stucco, and the famous Salone dei Mesi. It also is home the the Museo Civico di Arte Antica. Palazzo Massari hosts the Museo Giovanni Boldini, dedicated to this 19th century Ferrarese artist and the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum Filippo de Pisis.
Other sights: Palazzo Comunale, S.Paolo, S.Francesco, Casa Romei ( a beautiful 15th century mansion built for the banker Giovanni Romei), Palazzina Marfisa ( a 16th century patrician residence), Corpus Domini church, the 9km City Walls where you can walk or jog, Museo Archeologico Nazionale, the convent and church S.Antonio in Polesine.
