PARMA

This town is rich in artistic masterpieces, offering long pedestrian precincts.

Madonna della Steccata: an outstanding Renaissance church; the inside hosts frescoes by several 16th century painters, notably Parmigianino. Visit the mustard coloured Palazzo del Governatore and the beautiful Lombard - Romanesque Duomo, dating from the 11th century. It hosts an earlier work by Parmigianino. Correggio painted the fresco of the Assumption in the void dome, the most famous of Correggio's works. The Cathedral was erected by the heretic bishop Cadalus, who later became antipope Honorius II. Also interesting, the beautiful octagonal Baptistery in pink Verona marble.

The Spezieria Storica di San Giovanni Evangelista, at Borgo Pipa, is a 13th-century pharmacy that preserved its medieval interior. The Renaissance church of S.Giovanni Evangelista hosts a cycle of frescoes by Correggio, as well as frescoes by Parmigianino. The Teatro Regio is one of Italy's most important opera houses; many operas by Verdi and Bellini have been performed here for the first time.

Parma's biggest monument is the Palazzo della Pilotta. Started for Alessandro Farnese - Pope Paul III - in the 16th century, this building was almost destroyed by WW II bombing, though it's been rebuilt and now houses the Galleria Nazionale, the Teatro Farnese and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. Interesting also, a visit to the Chamber of St. Paul. The rooms of this ancient monastery were frescoed by Correggio and Araldi. The tour also includes the Cell of St. Catherine in the convent gardens.

Across the river from the Palazzo della Pilotta, the Parco Ducale is a set of gardens laid out in the 18th century around the Renaissance Palazzo Ducale.

You may also visit the Casa di Toscanini, the birthplace of the composer who debuted in the Teatro Regio here. Also interesting; the Museo Glauco Lombardi, housed in the Neo-Classical Palazzo della Riserva.
