PIACENZA
During the Renaissance, the local aristocratic families built here over fifty Palazzi, with elegant porticoes and grand gateways.
The most imposing of them is Palazzo Farnese, whose construction began 1558. It now is housing the city's museum as the Pinacoteca and the Museo del Risorgimento. The Gotico, which dominates the main Piazza is a mansion built in Lombard Gothic style. The Galleria d'Arte Moderna Ricci-Oddi houses over 850 works of modern Italian art.
Piacenza also has wonderful churches, such as the Madonna di Campagna in Bramantesque Renaissance style which hosts the miracolous image of the Madonna della Campagnola. Or the church of San Sisto, founded by Benedictine nuns in the year 874, where Margherita Farnese (1522-1586) was buried. A copy of Raffaello’s “Madonna Sistina”, originally commissioned for this church, hangs over its high altar. The original painting was sold by the Benedictine monks to the king of Poland in 1754, for 10,000 gold pieces; today it is the main piece of the Dresden Museum.
The Romanesque cathedral of town, with a facade of sandstone and pink marble, was built in 1122-1233 on the earlier one of S.Giustina.Other interesting churches are the early Christian basilica of Sant'Antonino, S.Savino and S.Francesco.
