REGGIO EMILIA

The old provincial capital is also known as “the home of the Italian flag”. On the 7th of January, 1797, the delegates of the Cisalpina Republic decided the green, white and red Standard or Flag to become universal.

This flag became the symbol of Italy as a whole after 1848. Today the Museo del Tricolore housed in the Town Hall, in Piazza Prampolini, hosts several objects and documents dating back to the Risorgimento.

The Basilica Beata Vergina della Ghiara is famous for an extraordinary cycle of 17th-century paintings, works by Guercino, Carracci, Spada, Tiarini and Bonomi. The cathedral/Duomo dates back to the 9th century and hosts a noteworthy baptistery.

The Musei Civici are the city museums which host the collection gathered together by L.Spallanzani ( paleontological finds, a zoological and anatomica section, numismatics, ceramics etc.) Interesting sights are: the 15-th century Basilica di San Prospero, the Galleria Parmeggiani and the Bianello Castle in nearby Quattro Castella.
