TRIESTE

Founded in Roman times as Tergeste, it became the main harbour in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The centre of town is Piazza Unità d'Italia lined with the Palazzo Comunale, Casa Stratti, Palazzo del Governo, Palazzo Pitteri.

Visit the complex of the churches of San Silvestro, the oldest church in town, and S.Maria Maggiore. You reach them by climbing a monumental stairway. San Giusto, the cathedral in Romanesque style, boasts interesting mosaics.

Among the interesting sights there are the Museo Civico di Storia e Arte, the Roman theatre, the Renaissance fort, the orthodox San Nicoḷ, the Museo Revoltella, the Museo del Mare.

Piazza della Borsa is the economic and administrative centre of Trieste and is dominated by the building of the Borsa Vecchia, the stock exchange, Palazzo Tergesteo and by the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi.

It also is possible to visit the Risiera di San Sabba, turned into a prison camp by the Nazis in 1943 and now a museum.
