In this area there are thousands of caves in rocky and rugged terrain.

The strip of Carso lying in the Italian territory includes the towns of Sgonico, Monrupino and the Foiba di Basovizza, symbol of the massacre carried out by Yugoslavian troops at the end of WW II and now a national monument.
