Tradition says that the god Saturn founded this ancient city, perched on a ridge overlooking the valley of the river Sacco.

Later, it became a sort of papal capital. Here a supporter of the French king Philip IV slapped Boniface VIII and another pope, Alexander III, excommunicated the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick I Barbarossa.
