Subiaco

At short distance from Subiaco there is the Monastery of Santa Scolastica founded in the 5th century.

The building is laid out around three cloisters, one from the late 1500s, one from the 12th century and one from the Romanesque period (cosmatesque masterpiece).

In the 9th century, the monks of S.Scolastica founded the Monastery of San Benedetto, on the site it is said the Saint had retreated.

Two churches, the Chiesa Superiore and the Chiesa Inferiore were built between the 13the and 15th century around the small cave of Sacro Speco.

The Chiesa Superiore hosts 14th century frescoes by the Sienese school.

The Cappella di San Gregorio Magno in the Chiesa Inferiore hosts a portrait of St.Francis painted in 1223.

The Sacro Speco cave is decorated with a cosmatesque-style altar and frescoes.
