VITERBO
An important Etruscan town, later Papal See from 1257 to 1281; enclosed within impressive walls.
The oldest district is the Quartiere San Pellegrino with medieval houses, towers and archways.
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is flanked by a black and white striped bell tower. This church has a Renaissance facade and, inside, an interesting cosmatesque-style floor.On the same square, the Palazzo dei Papi with its open gothic loggia, built in the 12th century as a papal residence. Have a look at the Palazzo del Comune and the nearby Palazzo del Podestą, as well as at Piazza Fontana Grande.
Piazza della Rocca is a large square dominated by the Rocca Albornoz. The Museo Civico has archaeological exhibits and in the Museo della Macchina di Santa Rosa you may explore the secrets of the huge processional statue of St.Rose.
The plain, gothic church of San Francesco is the burial place of two popes, Clement IV and Adrian V, both laid in impressive Cosmatesque tombs on either side of the main altar.Also interesting: the Convento della Trinitą and the Convento di Santa Maria del Paradiso, now home to the Universitą della Tuscia.
