Tarquinia The ancient Tarquinia, Tarxuna, was one of the most important Etruscan towns in Lazio. The town now appears predominantly medieval, with towers and buildings dotted with dark volcanic tufo stone. Palazzo Vitelleschi hosts the Museo Nazionale Archeologico Tarquinese with the splendid sarcophagi of Magnate and the Pulena and Camna families. There are many famous masterpieces on display, like the terracotta Winged Horses. Also interesting in town is the Romanesque church of S.Maria di Castello. Two km south of Tarquinia is the Necropolis of Monterozzi cut from the volcanic rock. There are over 6000 tombs, but only 15 may be visited; don't miss the Tomb of the Shields. |
