Sabbioneta
One of the ideal cities, typical in Renaissance times.
Built by Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna from 1554-1591 on a pre-existing medieval nucleus and modelled after the Roman grid plan with the perpendicular cardus and decumanus.
Visit the Palazzo Ducale, Santa Maria Assunta, Palazzo del Giardino (the duke's private residence decorated with fresco cycles), the Galleria degli Antichi, the Teatro all'Antica and the Museo d'Arte Sacra.
The Chiesa dell'Incoronata is an imposing Bramantesque church which hosts the Mausoleum of Vespasiano designed by Giovanni Battista Della Porta.
