PAVIA

A town of pre-Roman origins with the old walled city full of Romanesque churches and patrician mansions.

The Castello, built in 1360-65 was the reisdence of the Visconti and Sforza families. It now houses the Musei Civici, several museums like the Pinacoteca Malaspina (works by Antonello da Messina, Bellini, Correggio and Tiepolo), the Museo del Risorgimento and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna.

The church of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro was founded in the 8th century to house the remains of St Augustine: It also hosts the tombs of the Lombard kings, saints and philosophers. (Boezio, Severino). Santa Maria del Carmine with its brick facade is a beautiful medieval church with 15th century frescoes.

The Duomo is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, with paintings by Sacchi and Moncalvo and a large crypt.The main square of Pavia is Piazza della Vittoria, lined with Renaissance buildings, shops and cafès.

Other interesting churches are S.Giovanni Damnarum, Santa Maria di Canepanova (a Marian sanctuary with the miraculous image of the Virgin); San Michele (richly decorated sandstone facade, 12th century fllor mosaic, frescoes from the 15th century and a masterpiece of medieval art, the crucifix by Teodote dating back to the 10th century); San Teodoro and San Lanfranco (medieval church of a Vallobrosan monastery).

Also noteworthy: the Cripta di Sant'Eusebio; the medieval towers of Piazza Leonardo da Vinci; the University, one of Italy's oldest.
