VARESE In the 18th century Varese was a popular holiday resort; it is a town with interesting attractions. The heart of town is Piazza Podestà; close by the buildings of Broletto. The Basilica di San Vittore hosts paintings by Mazzucchelli and Cerano and has a large Baroque bell tower. The Romanesque baptistery of San Giovanni is famous for its 14th century frescoes. Don't miss the Palazzo Estense and the beautiful Giardini Estensi, an Italianate park. Villa Mirabello hosts the Musei Civici. Also interesting: the private residences of Villa Panza di Biumo and Villa Ponti. The Castello di Masnago, dating back to the 14-15th century boasts a Gothic cycle of frescoes. |
