ASCOLI PICENO

A charming city built in Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque style.

The Duomo of S.Emidio stands on the site of a Roman basilica.

Inside there are a 12th century alterpiece and a polyptych by Carlo Crivelli.

The saint's remains lie in a Roman sarcophagus in the crypt.

The Pinacoteca Civica and the Galleria d'Arte Contemporanea are both worth a visit.

Don't miss the churches of San Francesco and San Gregorio (with traces of 14th century frescoes).

The heart of town is the beautiful Piazza del Popolo, lined with Renaissance buildings and with a portico of 50 arches.

Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo is on the western side of the square; the north is closed by the Loggia dei Mercanti.
