URBINO A renaissance town and the birthplace of Raphael. You may visit his birthhome which is laid out around an internal courtyard and has period furniture. From the gardens of the Fortezza Albornoz you get a beautiful view of the town. The most famous sight of Urbino is the Palazzo Ducale, a Renaissance masterpiece by Francesco Laurana and the residence of Federico II of Montefeltro. Several important artists like Piero della Francesca, Raphael, Barocci and Botticelli worked on the 250 rooms. The building is home to the Galleria Nazionale della Marche which hosts masterpieces by Paolo Uccello, Piero della Francesca and other artists. Also, visit the casa dei Barocci where the painter Federico lived, as well as the Oratorio di San Giuseppe. The Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista boasts frescoes by Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni. The heart of town is Piazza Duca Federico, overlooked by the Duomo. Close by, the Palazzo dell'Universitą and the Teatro Sanzio. |
