Campobasso ::.
CAMPOBASSO This town is the regional capital of Molise and probably was founded in the Lombardic period. Campobasso preserves a lovely historic centre with typical medieval features dating back to the period of the powerful Monforte family. Visit the Monforte Castle, now partly destroyed, and the Romanesque churches of San Bartolomeo, San Leonardo and San Giorgio. San Giorgio is the oldest church in town; it features a frescoed dome and the interesting Cappella di San Gregorio ( late 1300s). The centre of town is overlooked by the Neo-Classical cathedral of the Santissima Trinità. Sights worth seeing include the Samnite Museum as well as the church of Sant Antonio Abate which houses the collection of carvings and wooden sculptures of sixteenth-century masters of Molise. The Museo Archeologico exhibits Samnite finds and documents the history of the settlement. |
