ISERNIA
The second city of Molise was founded by the Samnites on the ridge of a hill separating the valleys of the Sordo and Carpino rivers.
Unfortunately over the centuries the town was destroyed by earthquakes and heavily bombed in World War II.
Don't miss the Cathedral, Neo-Classical in style, which hosts a 15th century Byzantine-style panel inside.
The centre of town is Piazza Celestino V wit the Fontana della Fraterna, built in the 1300s using material from Roman constructions.
The most important sight is the Museo Nazionale delle Monache, hosted in the rooms of a former Benedictine monastery, which exhibits finds from the large prehistoric settlement in the area of La Pineta.
