This hilltown was founded around 1230 by Frederick II, after thew old settlement had been distructed by the Saracens.

The town's layout is characterized by circular streets and Claustri - buildings which overlook dead-end squares entered by a narrow street.

The most interesting are the Claustro Tricarico and the Claustro Giudecca.

The Museo Archeologico documents the town's ancient history.
