Castel del Monte
Castel del Monte
Symbol of Frederick II, this castle rises completely isolated, high above the countryside of the nearby town of Andria in the area of Minervino Murge.
Built between 1229 and 1249.
Example of Swabian architecture, the two-storey Castle is Gothic in structure, linked to the incisive Apulian Romanesque tradition: it has an even octagonal design with eight large towers, also octagonal.
The Castle, is considered by the majority of the historians to be a hunting lodge for Frederick II.
With the fall of the Swabians it was principally used as a prison. later on, unguarded, it became home to shepherds until it was recovered and restored by the State.
