S.Giovanni Rotondo - Monte Sant'Angelo

Monte Sant'Angelo stands on a spur of the Gargano mountains, at about 800 mt.

A place of worship of the Archangel Michael, during the Middle Ages, the beautiful Basilica of San Michele become the destination for all the pilgrims: many famous Popes and Saints visited this site: Saint Francis, Santa Caterina of Siena, and San Tommaso D'Aquino.

It also was a stopping place for the crusades on the way to the Holy Land.

The Basilica had been constructed around the cave where it is said that the archangel appeared. The former 13th century Franciscan monastery now houses the Museo delle Arti e Tradizioni del Gargano.

A little bit further down the promontory you find San Giovanni Rotondo.

Crowds of pilgrims and of tourists come from all regions of Italy and from all over the world, to pray on the Tomb of San Padre Pio da Pietrelcina, in the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Delle Grazie.
