TARANTO

Lying at the end of the gulf which takes its name, Taranto is an important port town on the Ionian sea. It hosts one of of the most interesting museums of Southern Italy, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale which offers visitors a complete view of the Magna Graecia civilization.

One of the oldest Romanesque churches in Puglia is the Cathedral of S.Cataldo which dates back to 1071.The facade is baroque; the interior has a coffered ceiling and a crypta with byzantine frescoes of the XII century. On the floor, traces of the original mosaics. The chapel of S.Cataldo dedicated to the saint is richly decorated with inlaid marbles, statues and frescoes. The altar holds the bones and a silver staue of the Saint.

Another interesting church to visit is S.Domenico Maggiore with its baroque altars. In Piazza Castello have a look at the Aragonese Castel Sant'Angelo and at the ruins of the Doric Temple of Poseidon.
