Massafra

Massafra

An old town which dates back to 971, cut in two parts by the ravine di S.Marco, it has a canyon-like appearance.

Don't miss a visit to the basilian crypts, carved in tufo stone and decorated with frescoes:

Cripta della Candelora, Cripta di Sant'Antonio Abate, Cripta di S.Leonardo, Cripta della Buona Nuova with a 13th century Madonna on the altar.

The sanctuary of Madonna della Scala (1731) is located right in the ravine and may be reached by a spectacular Baroque staircase made up of 125 steps.

Interesting sights are: the old Quartiere Terra, the 15th century Castello Angioino and the old Chiesa Madre from the 1400s.
