Aeolian Islands - Isole Eolie

This volcanic archipelago on Sicily’s North-Eastern Tyrrhenian coast is a unique destination, famous for the beautiful flora and fauna, the beaches, thermal resorts and hustorical remains. Each island has a different character.

On Lipari, the main island, the volcanic phenomenon can be observed in the island's hot thermal springs (up to 600), in its fumaroles and in its 12 volcanic systems converging towards the 602 metres of Monte Chirica. There are spectacular beaches and breathtaking ragged coasts. Don't miss the Belvedere Quattrocchi, the Terme di San Calogero and the beach of Acquacalda. Visit the old Norman cathedral and the Museo Archeologico Eoliano.

Panarea is a jet-set island and the smallest one. The main village, San Pietro, is the port. The other two villages north and south of San Pietro are Ditella and Drauto. We recommend a boat tour to the nearby small islands of Basiluzzo, Dattilo and Lisca Bianca, to the Scoglio Bottaro (with its underwater "fumaroles"). At Capo Milazzese there are the remains of a noelithic village, founded at Cala Junco.

Salina is a green island with many wineyards, More than 400 different types of plants grow here. It is also the island with the highest peaks such as the three volcanoes that originated e.g Monte Fossa delle Felci (962 m), which is partially covered by one of the most beautiful strawberry tree woods of the entire Mediterranean. You may visit the natural reserve at Monte dei Porri and Fossa delle Felci.

Vulcano is made up of three ancient craters: one between Monte Aria and Monte Saraceno, the Gran Cratere and Vulcanello. Famous for the fango baths in the warm waters of its submarine springs. It is the closest isle to the Sicilian coast. Its name is a clear description of its geography: a land of lava and fumarole, yellow sulphur rocks and black sands.

Stromboli - This 924 metre high lava mountain (Serra Vancori) is Europe's biggest active volcano after the Etna. During the night, the glittering "sciara" of fire (the red-hot flow descending towards the sea) can be seen from the boats. The hamlets are Scari, Ginostra, San Vincenzo. You may visit the Osservatorio Vulcanologico and then climb to the top of the crater.

Alicudi and Filicudi are the most eastern islands; Alicudi has no transportation system, only paths and mule tracks.
