Ragusa ::.
RAGUSA This town is set on a limestone hill and divided in two distinct areas: Ragusa Ibla the old town with its lovely baroque architecture, and Ragusa, built after the 1693 earthquake. Ragusa Ibla's best-known church is the Duomo di San Giorgio, which rises above an elegantly decorated flight of stairs. It has a majestic dome and was built in 1738 by the famous architect Rosario Gagliardo, being considered his masterpiece. Close by you find splendid buildings like Palazzo Arezzi and Palazzo Donnafugata.The Villa Comunale, the public gardens, offers a beautiful view on the mountains and over the Irminio valley. The Church of San Giorgio il Vecchio has an amazing Gothic-Norman doorway. Don't miss Santa Maria dell’Idria, with its bell tower, decorated with majolicas from Caltagirone. Palazzo Cosentini is the most typical of the baroque buildings in town; it has elegant balconies with ornamented corbels, sculptured animals and masks. The Cathedral S.Giovanni Battista in the "modern" part has splendid stucco decorations. Also interesting, the Museo Archeologico which displays exhibits from the prehistoric period, of Siculan cultures, from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine period. |
