BOLZANO

This is the main town of Alto Adige, a bilingual city close to the Dolomites.

The Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was begun in Romanesque style, the continued in Gothic style, it was finally concluded in the 15th century. Inside there are many beautiful frescoes.

The Chiesa dei Domenicani hosts 14th century frescoes; don't miss the Cappella di San Giovanni which has a fresco cycle by artists of the Paduan Giotto school.

Bolzano has many interesting museums like the Modern Art Museum, the Museo Mercantile, the Museo Civico (rich collection, of Gothic art, traditional objects and costumes), the Museo Archeologico (reconstructions of the Paleolithic and Mesolithic sites; a refrigerated room which recreates the conditions where Otzi, the corpse discovered in the Similaun glacier, was found).

The lively Piazza delle Erbe, is the square for the local open-air market.

Via dei Portici is lined with shops, and 16th, 17th and 18th century houses and leads you to Piazza del Municipio.

Visit the Chiesa dei Francescani and the fresco-decorated cloister; the Vecchia Parrocchiale di Gries, with its famous panelled Gothic altar by pacher.

For a view and a pleasant stroll, we recommend the Passeggiata Sant'Osvaldo-Santa Maddalena, among the vineyards and woods.

Don't miss the medieval Castel Roncolo: inside there are several unique cycle of frescoes.

At about 20km there's the famous Lake of Carezza, a still lake which reflects in its waters the surrounding trees and mountains.
