Trento ::.
TRENTO Trento is an old Roman town with medieval appearance. The main square is Piazza Duomo, with the cathedral, the Palazzo Pretorio and a row of painted houses, among these, the renaissance Case Cazuffi and the medieval Casa Balduini. The Duomo of San Vigilio is in Romanesque style and has a series of 15th century frescoes inside. You may also visit the crypt with the remains of the basilica dating back to the 6th-12th centuries. The Museo Diocesano Tridentino hosts paintings and the cathedral treasury with liturgical objects. Stroll through Via Manci and have a look at Palazzo Galasso, locally known as Palazzo del Diavolo and at the Baroque Chapel. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore is built in white and red stone typical for the city; several meetings of the Council of Trente were held in this church. San Lorenzo, one of the oldest churches of Trento was built in the 12th century as part of a Benedictine abbey. Sant'Apollinare hosts a painting by the German artist Albrecht Altdorfer. Also interesting: the Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea with works from the Secessionist period up to the early 20th century - Segantini, Bonazza, Garbari and many others. Don't miss the Castello del Buonconsiglio. This castle developed around an ancient tower, in 1240; later on walls, an inner garden and the Magno Palazzo were added letting it become an extremely complex structure. |
