AREZZO An important centre for the production of gold jewellery. Within the old town there are many interesting sights. The Gothic Duomo is famous for its 16th-century stained glass windows by Guillaume de Marcillat. The interior hosts a fresco by Piero della Francescaand some terracottas by Luca della Robbia. The 13th century Basilica di San Francesco, boasts a cycle of recently restored, beautiful frescoes by Piero della Francesca; the Legend of the True Cross. The Piazza Grande or Piazza Vasari is a wonderful Medieval square, famous for its antiques market and overlooked by several impressive historic buildings, as the church Pieve di Santa Maria, Palazzo del Tribunale, Palazzo della Fraternitą dei Laici and the Palazzo delle Logge by Vasari. In the Via Orto you may visit the Casa di Petrarca, where the poet was born in 1304. Also interesting: the church of S.Domenico (crucifix by Cimabue), the Museo e Casa Vasari (decorated by himself) and the Museo d'Arte Medievale e Moderna with works by Andrea della Robbia, Vasari, Signorelli and by the Macchiaioli artists. |
