Perugia ::.
Assisi Assisi is a favourite tourist destination. Located high on a hilltop it was the home of St. Francis, the founder of the Franciscan order of friars. Although the town was struck by a violent earthquake in 1997, much of the damage has been repaired. One of the most severely damaged buildings, however, was the treasured Basilica of San Francesco, known for its vivid frescoes by Giotto that depict the life of the saint. The upper basilica has recently reopened and, though restoration continues, many of the unique frescoes can be admired again. The lower basilica and St. Francis' tomb are also open to the public. The construction of the church started in 1227 with the greatest artists of the time who participated like Giotto, Cimabue, lorenzetti and Simone Martini. Visit the Cathedral of San Rufino built around the year 1000. it has a beautiful Romanesque facade and in the interior, the font where St Francis and St Clare were baptized. The Basilica di S.Chiara is the second largest church of Assisi; in the right transeot ther's a cycle of frescoes which narrate episode sof the life of St Clare. The Piazza del Comune is based on that of the temple of Minerva built in the 1st century AD on a series of terraces. Here have a look at the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the Palazzo dei Priori and at the Chiesa Nuova. Other interesting sights are the Loggia dei Maestri Comacini and the Museo Civico. At 4 km outside of town visit the 15th century church of Santa Maria degli Angeli which incorporated the ancient church of Porziuncola. Inside there's the Cappella del Transito where St. Francis died in 1226. Further out, stands the Eremo delle Carceri, a hermitage with its 15th century church and the cave where St. Francis used to pray. |
