AOSTA
The regional capital and the only province of the Valley, is a city rich in history.
It was founded by the Roman as Augusta Pretoria in 25BC.
Evidence of the Roman period are the Arch of Augustus, the remains of the Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre and the Porta Pretoria.
You may visit the medieval Cathedral which also hosts a very interesting Treasury museum; the Church of S. Orso in Romanesque style with frescoes dating back to the 11th century and a charming cloister.
About 30 km from town you reach the Colle di Gran San Bernardo, a natural pass with Switzerland that has a rich history.
