PADOVA

This city, an important pilgrimage site, is famous for the great, seven-domed 13th-century Basilica of St Anthony in which this saint is buried. Inside, the bronzes on the high altar are by Donatello, as is the equestrian statue in front of the entrance.Visit the Treasury Chapel with over 100 reliquaries, the Cappella del Gattamelata, the Cappella di San Felice and the Chiostro del Capitolo.

Padua’s other main attraction is the small Cappella degli Scrovegni, a chapel, decorated with a cycle of 14th-century frescoes by Giotto, representing scenes from the life of Christ. Other attractions are the Prato della Valle, a vast square with a central green space, and the Orto Botanico, a botanical garden dating back to 1545, making it the oldest place of its kind in Europe. Many of the plants were the first examples of the respective species to be introduced into Italy.

Visit Palazzo del Bo, the main historical building of the city's university. Elena Corner Piscopia was the first woman ever to graduate in 1678 when almost all universities in Europe were closed to women. Have a look at the pulpit used by Galileo when teaching. Palazzo della Ragione, known as the "Salone" was built in 1218 to house the Law Courts of Padua. It is the largest medieval hall in Europe. It is located on Piazza delle Erbe, the centre of town's life, with colourful fruit and vegetable markets. Caffè Pedrocchi, opened in 1831 and became the centre of the Risorgimento movement for the liberation of Italy from Austrian rule. Later becoming famous for being always open.

Don't miss the Complesso Museale degli Eremitani consisting of the medieval Chiesa degli Eremitani, the Archaeological Museum, the Museo Bottacin, the Pinacoteca ( displaying paintings by Giotto. Bellini, Veronese, Tintoretto, Tiepolo and many others) and the Emo Capodilista picture gallery with more than 500 Veneto and Flemish paintings. Also interesting: the Duomo and Baptistery and the Scuola del Santo&Oratorio di San Giorgio.
