VERONA
A charming city on the banks of the River Adige, Verona was the setting of Shakespeare’s drama Romeo and Juliet. The Casa di Giulietta (Juliet’s House), a small Medieval home with a balcony and courtyard, attracts thousands of visitors and lovers each year. In fact it is a restored 13th century inn. You may also visit Romeo's house and Juliet's Tomb.
The 14th-century red brick Castelvecchio castle, next to the river, houses an extensive art museum, with important Renaissance paintings and sculptures from northern Italy. Works by Bellini, Mantegna, Carpaccio, Crivelli, Veronese and Tintoretto. However, the best-known building is the Roman Amphitheatre, called Arena, built in AD 290 and able to accommodate over 20,000 spectators. An opera festival, with open-air night-time performances, is staged here through summer.
The city’s most attractive church is the lovely Romanesque San Zeno, built to house the tomb of Verona' s patron saint. The facade is decorated with marble bas reliefs; also remarkable the bronze door panels which narrate San Zeno's life. Piazza delle Erbe is the most famous square; it hosts an open air market and is lined by restaurants and cafès.
Other interesting sights: the medieval bridge Ponte Scaligero, S.Fermo Maggiore, S.Anastasia, the Duomo (romanesque portal and cloister, Titian's Assumption as the most important work inside), S.Stefano ( built in the 6th century it is the city's oldest church), S.Giorgio in Braida, the Renaissance Garden Giardino Giusti, Piazza dei Signori.
