VICENZA

Dating back to Roman times, Vicenza is best known for the 16th-century works of the architect Andrea di Pietro della Gondola called "Palladio", whose published analyses of ancient architecture have contributed to spread the Renaissance throughout Europe. His buildings include the monumental Basilica Palladiana, the Teatro Olimpico with its beautifully painted stage-set, the oldest existing covered theatre and the Palazzo Chiericati, home to the Museo Civico.

The heart of Vicenza is the Piazza dei Signori, dominated by the Palazzo della Ragione, the Torre di Piazza and the Loggia del Capitaniato. Visit the churches of S.Lorenzo and Santa Corona and the Contrà Porti, a street lined with interesting buildings, such as Palazzo Porto-Colleoni, Palazzo Thiene and Palazzo Porto Barbarano.

Have a walk to the Monte Berico, a hill covered in cypress trees. On hilltop stands the baroque Basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Close by, the Villa Valmarana with works by Tiepolo.

A short distance out of town stands the most famous of Palladio's villas, La Rotonda. A model of Renaissance architecture, based on a square plan with four identical façades, a cubic structure surmounted by a dome.
